PUYB Presents…..Healing Ruby by Jennifer Westall

Healing Ruby 3Title: Healing Ruby
Author: Jennifer H. Westall
Publisher: Jennifer H. Westall
Pages: 369
Genre: Christian Historical Fiction
Format: Hardback/Paperback/Kindle

Ruby Graves, a young girl in Depression-era Alabama, faces the hardships of poverty and loss with as much faith as she can muster. At only the age of thirteen, she’s already lost a younger brother to illness, and now faces

losing both her father and the boy who’s stealing her heart to illnesses as well. Armed with her beloved Scriptures, she prays daily for their healing, only to have her tender faith shattered by her father’s death.

Through her pain, she’s able to connect with her long-lost Uncle Asa, who’s mere presence at his brother’s funeral brings murmurs of a scandalous past involving her parents and a prominent local pastor, Irwin Cass. When Ruby discovers that one of Asa’a many secrets is an ability to heal, and that she may be next in line for the “gift,” she vows to find the faith that has eluded her so far, a faith that could mean never losing loved ones again.

But faith and doubt can’t reside in the same heart, not according to her father, and doubt is Ruby’s constant companion. As she struggles to find the true meaning of faith, she’s opposed at every turn by the pastor who would see her family destroyed and a community that can’t see deeper than the color of one’s skin. Through her search for a faith that could move mountains and a true understanding of her gift, can Ruby trust in a God that may require the ultimate sacrifice?

“A fast-paced story that will leave readers wondering what’s next for Ruby Graves. This soulful, often poignant novel explores difficult subjects such as death, racism and religious hypocrisy, while still remaining hopeful. One of its greatest strengths is its cast of well-drawn secondary characters, including the…vengeful preacher who tries to thwart Ruby at every turn. Ruby’s unlikely friendship with a cast-out African-American woman and her child is a particularly bright spot in this often heavy novel.”

– Kirkus Reviews

What an amazing story, and I love the setting being in the 1930’s! Ruby was a special young lady, always willing to help those in need. Ruby’s life of heartache and disappointments in life leaves her with a passion and love for people, even so far as leaving out her own needs to help others. I love the feisty and determined spirit Ruby has in this book, and I appreciate the author sharing the faith that was so strong and evident in Ruby’s life.

This is my first book by Jennifer H. Westall, and one I thoroughly enjoyed! The characters were well created and developed so well as the story unfolds. I found myself wrapped up in the middle of the characters several times as I was reading. Healing Ruby will have you sitting on edge because you want to finish the book to see what happens! Since I don’t like giving away a lot of the book, I’ll not go into details about it, but I will say that it is full of twists and turns that make the story fun and interesting. I am really looking forward to more books for this author! I want to encourage you to pick up your copy of Healing Ruby for many hours of enjoyment and fun entertainment!

A Voice in the Night banner

Brian, Josh, and Thomas arrived at Blackstone Cabin with great expectations of fishing and having fun. Now in the midst of a raging storm, and a hooded stranger frantically knocking at their door, the boys desperately wished for Josh’s father, Mr.Joplin, to return to the cabin. Will he return in time to save the boys from danger, or will the boys open the door to the frantic knocking of the hooded stranger outside.

This was my first book to read by Ernestine Dail and I really enjoyed it! A Voice in the Night is a book for young readers, and it deals with issues that this age face today. Brian and Thomas were friends that came from very different backgrounds. Thomas seemed to get into a lot of trouble, and Brian was a pretty good guy. Could these two boys be friends without Brian following into Thomas’ footsteps?

If you enjoy short stories, you will love this one. I enjoyed getting to know Brian and Thomas as they dealt with their sticky situations and difficult problems they had to go through. Ms. Dail created characters that are believable and realistic and you will enjoy getting to know them throughout the story. This is a book you will read at one setting. I couldn’t put it down once I started reading! The author does a fantastic job of keeping the story smooth reading and interesting to keep your attention.

I really encourage young readers to read this really neat story. You are in for a real treat!!

About Super Luke Faces His Bully

Super Luke Faces His Bully is a fun loving adventure spoken straight from the heart of a super-sweet eight-year-old bully victim, Luke Giggleheart.  The Word of God is used as a lens to examine some of the issues that can make a person act like either a bully or a victim. During this adventure, Luke, our tender-hearted bully victim, learns about fear, being courageous and getting adults to help, while praying for his enemies.

Bullies are everywhere. At school, in your neighbor, and even at church. What should we do about someone that bullies us? Or what should be done to you if you are the one who bullies other people? In her book “Super Luke Faces His Bully,” Dr. Jakie C. Cogswell addresses the issues that come with someone being bullied.

Harry Jones was not someone Luke wanted in his life. Why? Because he had to face the abuse of being bullied by Harry whenever they were around each other. And the things that Harry did to Luke were not nice at all, they were embarrassing and they caused a lot of different emotions and attitudes with Luke.

Luke had a lot of channels in his head, and if we think about it, we all really do. He had a scary channel, attitude channel, yummy channel, God channel and more. Luke’s mom was always replenishing the God channel with good things when she meets with Luke and his buddies at their Bible Buddies Club. When Luke had the God channel on, this put good things into his brain to think about.  I love the idea of the channels. How true this is of every person really, and this is an awesome way to describe what goes on in our minds. And to put it on a child’s level as the author did, well this is just good professional and unique writing by Dr. Cogswell.

There is so much packed in this book I could go on and on talking about the different things, but you really need to grab a copy of this book for yourself to read and to have for your young readers.

This book is just plain good! The author uses God’s word to teach principles to your children of all ages how do deal with others doing things to them.

The book as a wonderful layout, and the illustrations are adorable. The entire inside and outside of the book is eyecatching and captures your attention, I highly recommend this book to everyone! Even adults will benefit from the lessons learned in this book,

The UnHappy Little Dragon…..Lessons Learned By Carolyn Wolfe Illustrated by Leslie Mathis

Welcome to Pump Up Your Books Tour For:

The UnHappy Little Dragon…..Lessons Learned

By Carolyn Wolfe   Illustrated by Leslie Mathis

Little Dragon Synopsis

This is the tale of a little Dragon who has a big problem, he cannot control his fire!

After a major mishap, he runs away into the forest and has a wonderful adventure where he meets new friends, learns that every creature has a unique gift, and also finds out the special way in which he can use his own remarkable gift of fire.

Little Dragon Excerpt

Shelley asked, looking at Happy expectantly.

Shelley The Turtle  said,”Let me ask you something son, when you practice your fire burning skills-what do you tell yourself?”

“Tell myself? What do you mean?” asked Happy not understanding what his new friend was getting at.

Shelley answered, “Well, maybe I should ask instead, how do you feel when you practice holding in your flame?

“Oh that! I feel scared, so scared that I will fail and burn everything up!” Happy answered sadly.

“Well now, I have a suggestion for you. Try feeling like you will not burn everything up. Instead tell yourself you will succeed in keeping your fire to yourself!” Shelley told him.

“But I am so scared. I really don’t think I can tell myself that I won’t burn everything up when I know I will!”

Happy argued in a worried little voice.

Shelley looked at Happy’s very unhappy face and said,”I have news for you Happy, and I want you to listen to me now!”

Then Shelley continued to explain.

“Dragons aren’t the only ones who have special gifts, Happy, no, no! All of the animals were given a special gift of one kind or another. All of us had to learn how to use it wisely, just like you. You sort of have to grow into your gift, like growing up! That’s why the animals need a teacher.

Can you guess what my special gift is?” Shelley asked, expectantly.

Happy didn’t know the answer so he shook his head and just kept quiet.

“Why Happy, I am a teacher!” Shelley said proudly.

My Thoughts on this book!

What would happen if you couldn’t control your fire? Well that is if you were a dragon. This is a serious problem Little Dragon had to deal with. Once after being so frustrated, Little Dragon ran into the woods, just to get away. He ran and ran. And ran. While in the forest, he started meeting friends. First it was Shelley the turtle, then Betty the bird, then Barney the beaver, and on it goes. Each of Little Dragon’s new friends loved his fire, and encouraging him, telling his it was his gift. As with Little Dragon’s gift, the other forest friend each had their own special gift that they shared. Read this wonderful book and take a trip to this forest of gifted friends.

In “The Happy Little Dragon,” Carolyn Wolfe writes a wonderful story to teach young readers that they are special, no matter how different they are. Using the animals in the forest helps teach children to feel differently about their fears and disappointments. Carolyn Wolfe has a special gift herself in writing stories like this to teach valuable lessons to her young readers. And the illustrations are adorable. The Little Dragon and the forest animals have a sweet childish personality, with colors that invite you in the pages. I highly recommend that you grab a copy of this beautifully written and illustrated book to read to your child.

Food Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss

Join Nicolette M. Dumke, author of the health/fitness book, Food Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss: Control Your Body Chemistry, Reduce Inflammation, and Improve Your Health (Allergy Adapt, Inc.), as she virtually tours the blogosphere  on her first virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book!

About Nicolette M. Dumke

Nicolette DumkeNickie Dumke enjoys helping people with food allergies and gluten intolerance find solutions to their health and weight problems. She began writing books to help others with multiple food allergies over 20 years ago and the process culminated in The Ultimate Food Allergy Cookbook and Survival Guide. She says, “This book contains everything I know to help with food allergies,” and it has helped many people come back from near-starvation. Her other books address issues such as how to deal with time and money pressures on special diets, keeping allergic children happy on their diets, and more.

A few years ago, while listening to the struggles of an allergic friend on the Weight Watchers™ diet, she remembered her own weight struggles* many years ago and thought, “There has to be a better way.” This was the beginning of a new quest, and she is now helping those who are overweight due to inflammation (often due to unsuspected food allergies) or high-in-rice gluten-free diets, as well as those who are not food sensitive but want to lose weight permanently, healthily, and without feeling hungry and deprived. Her unique approach to weight and health presented in Food Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss is based on body physiology and reveals why conventional weight-loss diets work against rather than with our bodies and therefore rarely result in permanent weight loss.

* (Nickie’s weight loss story, briefly, is that in her early 20s she could not lose on a calorie-counting diet in spite of repeatedly further reducing the number of calories she ate and swimming vigorously and often. Then she found a diet based on blood sugar control, lost weight without being hungry, and still weighs what she did in her mid-20s).

Nickie has had multiple food allergies for 30 years and has been cooking for special diets for family members and friends for even longer. Regardless of how complex your dietary needs are or how much or little cooking you have done, she has the books and recipes you need. Her books present the science behind multiple food allergies and weight control in an easily-understood manner. She has BS degrees in medical technology and microbiology. She and her husband live in Louisville, Colorado and have two grown sons.

About Food Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss

Food AllergyFood Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss answers the question, “Why is it so hard to lose weight?” Because it’s hard to put a puzzle together if you’re missing some of the pieces. We’ve been missing or ignoring the most important pieces in the puzzle of how our bodies determine whether to store or burn fat. Those puzzle pieces are hormones such as insulin, cortisol, leptin, and others.

In addition, we’ve been given some puzzle pieces that don’t belong or fit in the weight-control puzzle. Much of what we’ve heard about dieting and exercise is incorrect and can cause loss of muscle mass instead of fat or even result in weight gain. The idea that weight is determined solely by “calories in minus calories out” is an assumption not based in reality. Most weight-loss diets require us to endure hunger much of the time, but hunger means that our blood sugar is falling or low and our insulin level may be rising. Prolonged hunger leads to the release of adrenal hormones, and the hormonal cascade which follows results in the inability to burn our own body fat as well as causing any fat we eat to be stored rather than burned to give us energy.

Another problem with most weight loss diets is that they strictly dictate food choices, lack the flexibility that those on special diets for food allergies or gluten-intolerance require, and deprive us of pleasure. Individuals with food allergies face additional weight-loss challenges such as inflammation due to allergies which can lead to our master weight control hormone, leptin, being unable to do its job of maintaining a healthy weight. Those with gluten intolerance often eat a diet too high rice. Rice is the only grain which is high on the glycemic index in its whole grain form; thus eating too much of it will raise insulin levels and cause the body to deposit fat. Although the recipes in this book were developed for those on special diets, non-sensitive people will enjoy them as well, and the weight loss principles in this book will help anyone lose weight. (A chapter of recipes made with wheat and other problematic foods is included for those on unrestricted diets).

The most frustrating deficiency of conventional weight loss diets is that they don’t work long-term. Low-calorie, low-fat diets can lead to loss of muscle mass, and with less muscle to burn calories, this type of diet effectively reduces metabolic rate so we need less food. Rare is the person who loses weight by counting calories and keeps it off after they liberalize their diet! However, continual dieting for the rest of your life is not the way you need to live, and you do not have to be deprived of pleasure in order to lose weight. Overweight is not due to a lack of willpower. Rather, it is due to a chemical imbalance in our bodies. Once we begin to correct that imbalance by applying the principles in Food Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss, we can lose weight without hunger or deprivation and can maintain a healthy weight permanently and easily by regaining normal self-regulating hormonal control of our weight.

Book Excerpt:

Why have we cut calories, nearly eliminated fat, exercised strenuously, and yet not lost weight or kept it off? It’s because we were not working with our bodies. Instead, our efforts were based on the faulty assumption that “calories in minus calories out” is the major or only determiner of weight. We were ignoring the most important factors in our bodies’ decisions about whether to store or burn fat – hormones such as insulin, cortisol, leptin, and others…
The hormone insulin has a major influence on weight and hunger. High levels of insulin make us feel hungry and activate the enzyme lipoprotein lipase which takes fatty acids from the blood and stores them as triglycerides in fat cells. Therefore, by preventing insulin spikes, you avoid storing recently eaten fat and leave it in your bloodstream to be used for energy.
Low blood insulin levels allow the enzyme triglyceride lipase to be active. This enzyme promotes the breakdown of the triglycerides stored in fat cells and liberates the fatty acids from them into the bloodstream to be used for fuel. Thus, by keeping your insulin levels stable and low, you can flip your fat control switch from “store” to “burn.”…
The most important hormone for long-term maintenance of a healthy weight is leptin. However, it can be made ineffective by inflammation. You may be thinking, “I don’t have any major problems with inflammation.” Read the next few paragraphs and then decide whether this applies to you.
Sometimes inflammation is obvious – it causes redness, warmth, and/or pain. However, chronic inflammation can be silent. If you are overweight, you may not know it, but you are experiencing silent inflammation. As we gain weight, our bodies do not add more fat cells. The fat cells we already have become larger and are filled with more fat instead. They may leak as they are stretched more and more. Then immune cells called macrophages come in to clean up the mess. The macrophages release inflammatory chemicals in the fatty tissues as they are cleaning up…
Your body counteracts this silent inflammation by producing anti-inflammatory substances. Some of these interfere with the function of the hormone leptin. In optimally healthy people, leptin is responsible for automatically maintaining weight at the right level. Some people do not gain weight no matter what they eat. If they overeat, their well-functioning leptin control system boosts their metabolism and decreases their appetite to restore them to their best weight. When leptin is made ineffective by inflammation, the dysfunction is called leptin resistance, meaning that even though you have normal or high levels of leptin, your leptin does not work to suppress appetite and speed metabolism, thus maintaining a healthy weight.
This may sound like a depressing vicious cycle. Excess fat leads to inflammation and the substances that counteract inflammation (which are necessary to keep silent inflammation from causing symptoms) make it impossible for the body’s weight-control hormone, leptin, to function properly. Don’t despair though – there is a way to break this vicious cycle. There is also good news: As you slim down, leptin resistance abates and when you reach a healthy weight, you won’t have to struggle to maintain your weight. Your newly-functional leptin system will control your appetite and weight.

My Thoughts on this book!

Wow what can I say except that this is an awesome book! I do not have a gluten intolerance but I still use this book a lot. And after a Dr. visit today telling me I needed to lose a few pounds to help my back, well, I will be using it more.

Something that floored me today, my Dr. advised me to try foods and stuff to reduce inflammation because of a pinched nerve in my side, since I am allergic to nsaids. As I was reading through this book again this afternoon, I found it interesting that this diet really helps reduce inflammation while controlling body chemistry and improving health, all the while losing weight. It looks like the Lord placed this book in my hands and had my review scheduled for today for a reason, how awesome is this!! So I need to say a huge THANK YOU to the author Nicolette Dumke for writing this book, and for Dorothy at PUYB for having this tour!

There is so much information here about gluten-free foods, your health and diet, teaching how to control body chemistry, about the things we put in our stomachs, and so much more. This is truly a book for everyone to have. It will guide you through everything you need to know and to do to choose better health for yourself and your family. I just can’t say enough about this wonderful book.

I highly encourage you to go out and purchase a copy for yourself, and join me and many others as we strive to lose weight, treat our bodies well, and feel better to boot!
